Busted! He looks like a sad puppy in that last panel.

  2. jackmarten

he knows what he got to do! attacking is the best way to defend, beat her up and take what you want, or simply leave and come back later
i’d like to see what happens next!

Hmm…I’m not so sure if he really stole (or tried to steal) anything.
The way I see it, we’ve got a classic racism going on here.

He’s an Impallnian, so he must be a thief.

That’s just like saying, ‘Hey, he’s a Syrian, he must be a terrorist.’

I don’t know, that’s not the face of someone who just got caught red handed in my opinion.

Or do these two actually have some sort of history?
    So many questions…

Leave it to idiots like you to call “racist”
Want to call “wolf” more ?

He lives just out of town, his face is known by a number of the locals.
We’ve seen him steal in broad daylight, with plenty of witnesses around.
And he’s the type of person to steal from a little girl who completed a delivery for him.
Most likely she has either seen him steal before, or he stole from her the last time he visited the store. if she frequently keeps track of inventory, and has few customers through out the day, it’s easy to put the evidence together.
he now has a reputation as a thief, and it’ll be very difficult for him to clear his name, as he actually is guilty of theft. and while she may not have enough evidence to get him arrested, she has every right to decide who she does business with.
Here she is exercising her right to not do business with someone she knows is a thief.

Dude… the author herself said that what is happening in this panel is an act of racism, read her blurb. But you come and insult other readers acting all sanctimonious?

Jay may be a thief but I don’t think this lady knows him, she’s just assuming he is. And look at that uncharacteristic face in the last panel. She clearly touched a nerve there. I’m guessing that’s a remark he used to hear a lot before being a thief. This seems to be the case of “becoming the monster everybody expects you to be”.

        • McBroseph

i agree with this. it would be one thing if she referred to him by name, implying his (albeit probably earned) reputation as a thief, but she refered to him by his race

        • Kurai

I’m pretty sure the author was being sarcastic,
as the author has blatantly shown Jay stealing previous to this.

          • Pylgrim

And? I never denied that Jay is a thief, but that doesn’t mean that people who don’t know him cannot be racist against him and his kin. Think of it: If that lady did know for sure that Jay was a thief, how would have the sarcastic, annoyed-at-everything Jay we’ve seen up until now reacted? The artist decided to clearly picture him with a completely out-of-character wounded expression. What does that say to you?

          • The Meh

*cough* Can’t we all get along and enjoy the comic *cough*

  4. dredogastus f

*shocked look* You mean Jay DIDN’T steal something? Perhaps I have the wrong impression of him.

    • CasualObserver

All them sticky fingers. Built for stealin’. She is right to be wary.

      • Refugnic

It’s one thing to be wary and one thing to be judgemental.

As I said: Arabian who wears a beard? Terrorist!

Though I would assume that she’s had bad experiences in the past.

  5. McBroseph

so is there, like, a wiki or codex or something to go with this series? there is clearly a lot of world building in the background and i know almost for certain that many people would love to learn more about this whole setting. I know i would

  6. Bry

racist bitch. =3= albeit Jay has some sticky fingers, no doubt about that, but she just automatically assumes he stole something due to (i’m assuming) his race being notorious for being thieves? poor Jay’s face… i mean, he IS a thief…but still, the ONE time he means to be a paying customer, he gets smack from this bitch

    • Kurai

my guess is that he’s the type of thief that steals from individuals
he doesn’t steal from stores, services, or an inn/bar
but he’ll pickpocket, or steal food from a vendor at the market
easier to spend money, or eat the spoils, than sell stolen goods
the problem with being a thief in a small town,
is eventually you’ll earn a reputation,
and find the money you do have is now worthless,
when the locals start to refuse to take your money, or give you business.

      • Bry

but the storekeeper identified him by race, not name (or at the very least didnt acknowledge whether or not shes familiar w/ HIS specific antics as a thief). but, yea, i see Jay as being the type of thief that targets individuals. pickpockets money off individual ppl then go to a store to buy goods necessary, or steal the occassional food from a food stall

(Mod edit: I corrected this comment for you)

        • TheFatest!

There are numerous times people refer to others by their race and it was never a problem until now. It seems so normal to refer to someone are Eirian or Korean or whatever that I never saw it as an insult. Even now, he is just a thief and his reaction should have been more sly and deflective and less wounded. I feel the author is doing this character a disservice from what we have seen of him so far. Or blatantly trying to show he is more then a one dimensional character and forcing him to have a soft/weak side.
