    In a way, I think this is better for our heroine than studying under a “real” knight. She needs to understand how the world works. Alif seems like a mentor who can help her grow and mature without turning her into a cynic.

      Not really…or much rather not any more than a ‘real’ knight would have to live with.
      A knight is, per definition, a person who wields his blade for a lord, who is essentially paying him for his services with food, land, etc.

      Sure, they protect the people they are entrusted (or at least they should), but at the end of the day, they are exactly the same as mercs…getting paid for fighting/killing those who would cross their client.
